D. R. Berry, a prominent farmer and stock raiser and resident of Grundy county since 1858, died at 6:40 p.m. on November 17, 1935, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. V. L. Johnson of the Berry community north of Galt, Missouri.
Mr. Berry, who was 85 years old on Armistice Day, has been in falling health since he suffered a stroke of paralysis three years ago. He suffered another stroke and gradually grew weaker until the end. Since the death of Mrs. Berry July 10, 1926, Mr. Berry had made his home with his son-in-law and daughter, although he visited his other children often until health failed him.
He was a son of the late Daniel and Anna Berry and was born in Coshocton County, Ohio, Nov. 11, 1850. He came to Grundy County with his parents in 1858, and had always made his home here. He was married to Miss Alfaretta Clark on Oct. 4, 1874.
He owned a large farm in Myers township, where he and Mrs. Berry lived and raised their family of six children. He was one of the most successful farmers of that community and gave considerable attention to cattle raising and feeding. Later he and son, E.C. Berry were engaged in the breeding and selling pure bred Shropshire sheep, importing a number of fine animals.
Mr. and Mrs. Berry were both members of the Christian church at Berry, where they attended services and took an active part during their lifetime. Mr. Berry continued take much interest in church work as long as his health permitted.
The survivors include four daughters, Mrs. O.A. Pickett of Trenton, Mrs. C.E. payne of Chelhallas, WA, Mrs. V.L. Johnson of the Berry Community and Miss Lelah Berry of Olympia, WA; two sons, T.E. Berry of the Berry Community and E.C. Berry of Kansas City; also 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
One grandchild, Mrs. Goldia M. Cunningham of Olympia, WA, whose mother died when she was a small child, made her home with her grandparents until her marriage.
